Another visit to Alton Water in Suffolk. This lunchtime I parked up at the main car park and set off to visit a part of the lake I hadn’t been to before. There’s a large outcrop of land that juts out into the main lake giving a nice view of the reservoir in both directions…it’s also a good spot for Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea) to hide away from prying eyes (or cameras). I spotted this one on the opposite bank and allowed me to photograph him/her for a short while before getting irritated and flying off.
Popped out for a quick march around part of Alton Water this lunchtime and came across this fallen tree on the edge of the reservoir.
This Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) on Alton Water had just caught his fish supper when he spotted me and headed off in the opposite direction.
It was cold and pretty blowy on Alton Water today, this (and one other) windsurfer were out there braving the cold…pretty good conditions for them probably.
We’ve had a great Autumn, but the weather is definitely closing in now. Rain all day today, with just the briefest of pauses…and I was lucky enough to be out at Alton Water on Lemons Hill when that pause happened…but it really was not a pleasant day to be stood on an exposed bridge…even all the birds had hidden themselves away.
A very dull grey day today. I took a quick drive up to Alton Water and saw all sorts of interesting birds – cormorants, great crested grebes, a robin, wagtails, blue tits, a lovely white Egret…and what do I bring back photographically…a seagull!
I already had a wet sock from a hole in my shoe that developed about 5 minutes after I’d left the house for work, so scrabbling around on the edge of Alton Water to get this shot didn’t bother me at all.
Visited another section of Alton Water today and had a pleasant walk around one of the fishing areas which is great because you can get right down to the water’s edge without having to thrash your way through mountains of plant life 😉
This is Alton Water at Lemons Hill. I really had a hard time choosing between this and the colour version for today’s photo…but I’m a sucker for black and white! You can see the colour version after the break..
I rather kicked myself as I’d left my phone in the car and didn’t have a watch with me…so counted…I was aiming for 120 seconds – it was actually 141 seconds…
These swans came straight across to me when I stepped down onto the edge of the lake – obviously looking for food, I thought…but no – they marched up out of the water hissing at me…charming!
