Dragonfly

I have never seen so many dragonflies in Rowney Woods as I saw today…literally hundreds of hawkers flying around, particularly over the fields of barley near the entrance to the woods. The hawkers were far too busy to settle so I had to content myself with this female Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum) who stayed put long enough for me to photograph her.

As always – take my ID with a large pinch of salt…I’m regularly wrong – feel free to correct if you know 😉


I have been trying to get an inflight dragonfly for some time and I finally got one today whilst walking through Rowney Woods. Typically, having failed a number of times previously I managed to get 4 or 5 of them today!

We took a walk down the Flitch Way this afternoon, starting in Little Dunmow walking down to the edge of Great Dunmow and then completing a circle back to Little Dunmow. After being deluged by a short, sharp shower we came across this female Migarnt Hawker Dragonfly.
